Why should we care?
The ocean plays an essential role in our life today and it will forever. It provides over 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe and over 97% of the world's water supply. It provides us with beauty, inspiration and recreation. The ocean is the largest ecosystem on the earth. It houses about two hundred thousand species of animals and eight thousand species of plants. The ocean is also needed for 76% of the world's trade. But with the ocean being polluted it could be put to risk with the things we are doing.
Contributing Factors
Marine Dumping
This is garbage produced by people daily it includes: plastic, aluminum, rubber, glass and many other things are being dumped into the ocean like it is a landfill.
Accidental Oil Leakage Oil spills are detrimental because oil does not dissolve in water and can hurt marine life and beaches drastically. |
The Burning of Fossil Fuels
Many believe that fossil fuels are only influential to air pollution. This is true but clouds are in the air and therefore the ash and other elements that are released into the air all come down with rain. Industrial Waste
Industries are dumping waste into rivers and oceans. This includes: lead, mercury, and sulfur. |
