Dumping
Coal mining operations cause run-off which eventually will lead to rivers and lakes. This dumps coal, rock and other unwanted products into the water. Coal also creates enormous amounts of waste water. Gas can also be emitted into the atmosphere and when that is emitted it mixes with nitrogen and other chemicals to then form "weak gas" this is when both acid rain and polluted rain occurs. Another influence is oil. Oil spills and leaks during extraction or transportation result in jeopardizing whole ecosystems and animal lives.

What to do?
Again, as I have said many times what we have to do in order to prevent his from happening is to raise awareness. Once awareness is raised and the companies and business see what they are doing. Once they know what they are doing bigger people like the government can get involved. Another thing that business owners can do is to try to prevent as much hazardous gas and waste to get emitted into the atmosphere.
